Favorite Travel Apps

A question that we get asked frequently is what kind of applications do we use when traveling? Apps are here for us to make everything more convenient and accessible. Although we have a couple of general favorite ones, just know that the convenience and accessibility has also a lot to do with the destination that you are visiting. Especially before traveling internationally, make sure to research what apps are popular in the specific country for transportation, accommodations, etc.

However, we are about to tell you all of the apps we simply cannot travel without and the ones that we use in every single destination. The apps are from all types of categories such as accommodations, transport, convenience, entertainment, and more. I will try my best to group them in the most organized way.

Here are our favorite travel apps!

#1 Kayak

I personally use Kayak when it comes to all of my flight and hotel bookings! This is the app I use when I am planning way ahead for the trip itself. It helps me gather all types of rates from different sites and gives me the most inexpensive one. Cristian prefers Expedia but to be honest, it’s all the same. Kayak, in my opinion, gives me more options and a simpler way to book!

#2 Skyscanner

Skyscanner is for all of my last minute travelers! If you have an unexpected weekend off and want to go somewhere, Skyscanner will show the cheapest flights leaving from your local airport that weekend! It also shows you the cheapest accommodations in destinations and such. It’s the coolest app if you don’t have a preference in destination and simply just want to travel somewhere.

#3 American Airlines

We use our American Airlines app to gather our AAdvantage points and track our flight. We never necessarily book our flights through here since most of the time is a higher fare than other sites. However, it is great app to track your AA miles and your flight status.

#4 Airbnb

Now this is an app that we’re DYING to use but haven’t gotten the chance to. We’re planning a Vancouver, B.C trip soon so hopefully that will be the trip. However, this is a convenient app for you to book quick and inexpensive homes, rooms, etc for a trip. I would personally use this for a more laid back and quick trip rather than a longer one. I’m a hotel person at heart.

#5 Hotel Apps (Hilton, Marriot, etc)

As I mentioned, we do love staying at hotels and surprisingly sometimes you get the best fare by looking directly into the hotel. By booking this way, you’re also able to rack up points and use them for future stays. Our favorite apps are Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriot.

#6 Roadtrippers

Roadtrippers is GREAT for people who don’t necessarily want to fly and simply want to enjoy the road. This app is super convenient and will tell you everything that’s on the way to your destination. From food, accommodation, landmarks, sightseeing, etc. If you are doing a road trip soon, you NEED this app.

#7 Waze

Waze is a GPS app that tracks absolutely everything. If you’ve been driving recently, you have probably used this or have heard of this app. This is an essential if you are road tripping soon since it will give you all the traffic info on top of alternate routes and police locations throughout your trip.

#8 Gas Buddy

This is also an everyday essential but for sure a road trip essential as well. This app will bring up all of the near gas stations and will tell you the least expensive one. This app will help you save a couple extra bucks during your trip.

#9 Google Translate

If you are traveling to a foreign country, this is an ABSOLUTE essential. Google Translate will help you navigate the country with ease! It has features such as taking a picture of a foreign word and translating it instantly and even a conversation feature that will help you translate a full on conversation. This was extremely helpful during our Asia trip and actually helped us learn a couple of phrases for next time!

#10 My Radar and The Weather Channel

These two apps will help you accurately track the weather wherever you are. I do not personally rely on the built in iPhone weather app, especially when traveling. It’s essential to have a radar app to accurately track the weather and The Weather Channel app to track future weather wherever you are.

#11 Mobile Passport

Whoever invented this app is a genius. If you are traveling internationally this app is ESSENTIAL! Mobile Pass secures your passport right on your phone and in certain airports actually lets you do all the customs paperwork right on your phone! When we were traveling, we were able to do all of our customs paperwork while still sitting on the plane. All you have to do is have the customs officer scan your phone and you’re all set! Please do yourself a favor and download this app if you’re traveling international.

#12 Currency Exchange

I couldn’t stress this app enough for you guys! If you are traveling internationally you need this app. Instead of going back and forth on your safari or trying to do the math in your head, this app will save you a lot of time. This app is constantly updating the rates of different currencies and helps you do a quick currency exchange so you can see how much you’re paying in your local currency. (Wow that’s a lot of currency words) During our Asia trip, I can easily say I used this app more than 15 times a day. It also has a Apple Watch gadget so I could easily see the exchange on my watch without having to grab my phone. Currency Exchange app is extremely accurate and it was the most convenient app we used during our trip.

#13 Uber/ Lyft

Everyone has used at least one of these rideshare apps and they deserve a spot on this list. These are extremely convenient and easy to use. I don’t need to explain these apps since we are all familiar with them!

#14 Turo

Turo is like the Airbnb for cars. In this app, you can book a quick car for a day or a couple of days for a very inexpensive price. These are regular people renting out their cars and it’s easy to use!

#15 Google Trips

Google trips is great for my organized people! This app lets you create itineraries and organize all of your trip info in one app. If you are doing a big trip, I highly recommend organizing your trip to make sure you don’t miss anything!
