Tips on how to avoid pickpockets.

Traveling to new destinations is an enriching experience, but it's essential to stay vigilant and protect yourself from potential hazards. One common threat that travelers face worldwide is pickpocketing. To ensure the safety of your belongings and enjoy your trip worry-free, here are seven effective tips on how to avoid pickpockets while traveling.

1. Stay aware of your surroundings:

Maintaining awareness of your surroundings is crucial in preventing pickpocketing incidents. Avoid getting engrossed in your phone or other distractions while walking in crowded areas. Stay observant and be mindful of people around you, especially in bustling tourist hotspots, markets, and public transportation.

2. Keep your valuable items secure:

Minimize the risk of pickpocketing by keeping your valuable items secure at all times. Use a concealed money belt or a secure anti-theft backpack to carry your passport, cash, credit cards, and other valuables. Avoid keeping them in easily accessible pockets or unzipped bags that are within a thief's easy reach.

3. RFID Protected Sleeves

Pickpockets are finding ways around current technology. If you have a credit card with a chip, they are now able to steal your information by simply walking past you with a credit card machine. Having a RFID protected sleeve or pouch for your credit cards is an essential. Here are our favorites: RFID Blocking Sleeves and RFID Blocking Pouch

4. Distribute your belongings:

To further protect your possessions, distribute them throughout various hidden pockets and compartments. By distributing your cash, credit cards, and important documents, you reduce the likelihood of losing everything if pickpocketed. Additionally, consider leaving redundant identity documents safely locked in your hotel room.

5. Crossbody Bag

I will always say a crossbody bag is must when traveling. However, it really is essential for safety and anti-pickpockets. Buying the correct crossbody bag will make all the difference. The Fjallraven Kanken Sling bag is my holy grail crossbody bag. Not only does it have the perfect pockets, it has the handle lock which makes it extremely difficult for someone to pickpocket. Simply leave it in front of you at all times and in crowded places always keep your hand on it.

6. Be cautious in crowded areas:

Pickpockets often target crowded places where it's easier to go unnoticed. Pay extra attention while walking through busy markets, tourist attractions, and public transportation hubs. And as mentioned, create a physical barrier by wearing your backpack in front or securing your bags with locks or anti-slash straps to deter potential thieves.

7. Avoid flaunting wealth or valuables:

One of the best ways to avoid becoming a target is to avoid flaunting your wealth or valuables. Dress modestly and leave flashy jewelry or expensive gadgets at home. It's also advisable to avoid displaying large amounts of cash while making transactions; instead, use credit cards or withdraw money from secure ATMs during the daytime.

8. Blend in with the locals:

Instead of standing out as an obvious tourist, try to blend in with the locals. Dress like the locals and familiarize yourself with their mannerisms and customs. By adopting a low-profile appearance, you'll become less attractive to pickpockets.

9. Stay cautious of diversions and scams:

Pickpockets are often skilled at creating distractions or using scams to divert your attention while they snatch your belongings. Watch out for common tactics such as street performances, individuals offering unsolicited help, or intentionally spilled substances. Stay cautious and skeptical of anyone approaching you in such situations.

By staying vigilant, securing your valuables, and being cautious in crowded areas, you can significantly reduce the chances of falling victim to pickpocketing.
